Lindy Effect

Tom McLaughlin   ·

(noun) A theory that suggests the future life expectancy of certain non-perishable things is proportional to their current age.

Hate on PHP all you like, the Lindy Effect tells me it’s not going away any time soon.

Originally coined in a 1964 article in the New Republic for Lindy’s Delicatessen in New York, where comedians would gather to pontificate about show business.

$$ L = \frac{k}{E} $$

Where:

  • $L$ = career longevity (years)
  • $E$ = exposure frequency (shows per year)
  • $k$ = baseline longevity constant
