Chinese Room

(noun) A thought experiment devised by philosopher John Searle in 1980 that challenges the possibility of machine consciousness and understanding.

The Chinese Room argument suggests that even sophisticated AI systems may manipulate symbols without true comprehension.

The experiment imagines a person who doesn’t understand Chinese locked in a room with a comprehensive instruction manual. By following the manual’s rules, they can respond to Chinese input with appropriate Chinese output, appearing to understand the language to outside observers. Searle argues this demonstrates that syntax (symbol manipulation) is insufficient for semantics (meaning and understanding).

The Chinese Room directly challenges “strong AI” - the hypothesis that appropriately programmed computers have cognitive states, understanding, and potentially consciousness. Searle’s central claim is that a computer executing a program cannot have genuine understanding, regardless of how convincing its responses appear.
